In SAP FI and integrated supplier-invoice processing, a payment block prevents an open supplier item or supplier account from being paid even though the invoice may already be posted. Blocks can be set manually or arise from configured checks. A release should occur only after the blocking reason has been reviewed and resolved, because removing the block changes the item's payment eligibility.
What a payment block controls
A payment block is a payment control, not necessarily a posting rejection. For example, an invoice can be posted for accounting but remain unavailable for payment because a variance, approval issue or other exception still needs attention. SAP documentation also supports supplier-level blocks that prevent the payment program from paying open items for that supplier.
Why release is a business decision
Releasing a blocked invoice should answer a concrete question: has the reason for withholding payment ceased to be valid? For procurement-related invoices, teams may need evidence from Purchasing, goods receipt, quality or the supplier. For a manually imposed FI block, the reviewer should understand why the block was set and whether the underlying risk has been cleared.
Different block origins need different handling
Not every blocked supplier invoice has the same origin. SAP Logistics Invoice Verification can block invoices because configured tolerances or other invoice-verification checks are exceeded, while Financial Accounting can also hold payment through payment-block fields or supplier-level controls. The release path should respect the source of the block rather than simply clearing whichever indicator is easiest to reach.
Controls consultants should test
Confirm who can set and remove blocks, which block reasons are used, whether automatic blocks are released only when their conditions are no longer valid, and whether segregation of duties is appropriate. Test payment proposals with blocked and unblocked items, supplier-level blocks, credit memos, partial exceptions, and the effect of long blocks on due dates and cash-discount opportunities.
