A network activity is a defined unit of project work inside an SAP Project System network. Activities have a duration, start and finish dates, require resources and can incur costs; relationships then connect them into the sequence needed to execute the project.
Activities turn a network into executable work
A network establishes the execution framework, but activities are where the actual work is described. SAP documentation characterizes activities as process components with duration, defined start and finish, resource requirements and cost impact. That makes the activity the practical unit for scheduling and monitoring project execution.
Activity type changes the business meaning
Project System distinguishes activity types such as internally processed activities, externally processed activities and general costs activities. The distinction matters because an internal activity may use a work center and planned work, an external activity can trigger procurement-related processing, while a general costs activity represents planned project cost without the same internal-capacity logic.
Dates and duration feed the schedule
Activity duration and predecessor-successor relationships influence when work can start and finish. SAP's project network graph exposes activity dates, constraints, status, predecessor/successor information and assigned objects, which helps teams see why one activity may be critical or why a change propagates through the schedule.
Resources and costs make the activity operational
Activities can represent work that consumes people, machines or other resources, and they can contribute planned costs to the project. SAP's network-costing integration uses network activities and assigned objects when calculating planned project values, so inaccurate activity assumptions can affect both schedule and financial planning.
Status and confirmation show execution progress
Once work begins, activity status and confirmation information help distinguish planned work from work actually performed. Progress tracking can monitor network activities alongside WBS elements and network components, allowing the project team to focus on events and exceptions that matter for delivery.
Consultant thinking: choose the activity model from the real work
Do not begin with the activity type and force the business into it. First ask who performs the work, whether capacity must be planned, whether external purchasing is involved, what cost should be visible and which dependency must drive the schedule. The correct activity design follows those business facts.
