Direct answer

In SAP landscapes using SAP Credit Management, financial accounting provides information about outstanding customer receivables while sales processes can contribute commitments such as open orders or deliveries. The exact exposure categories, business-partner mappings and check points depend on solution scope and configuration.

What connects AR and credit management?

Accounts Receivable remains responsible for the integrity of the financial open item. Credit teams use consolidated information to assess whether a new commercial commitment is acceptable under a defined credit policy.

A practical credit-limit example

Suppose a customer has a credit limit of 500,000, unpaid invoices of 270,000 and additional eligible sales exposure of 160,000. Illustratively, 430,000 is already exposed; a proposed 120,000 order could trigger review because the combined amount would reach 550,000. This is a decision example—not a universal SAP calculation or an assertion that every sales order will automatically block.

If 100,000 of the receivables is correctly cleared after a payment, the exposure calculation may change after the relevant integration updates. An unapplied bank receipt is not proof that a particular invoice has been settled.

Receivables specialist and credit analyst reviewing a customer's open items and sales commitments.
Finance confirms the actual receivable; the credit function evaluates the overall customer exposure.

The roles behind the numbers

AR staff resolve cash application, open-item clearing and posting corrections. Sales staff explain upcoming demand and customer priorities. A credit analyst or authorized manager owns limit changes, risk policy and exceptions. Integration specialists ensure the right business partner, credit segment, and exposure category reach the intended checks.

Controls and exceptions that matter

A disputed invoice may still be legally open; simply tagging a dispute does not necessarily remove credit exposure. Reconcile financial open items, check customer and business-partner mappings, review aged overdue balances, and define who can override a credit block.

The payment, credit memo, limit change and order release each leave distinct evidence. Teams should retain the reason, approver and timing of important decisions rather than silently editing customer risk data.

Relationship between receivables, open sales exposure, credit policy and the credit decision.
Credit checks need a defined scope of exposure, not an informal invoice total.

What to ask as a consultant

Which exposure categories count for this credit segment? When do FI-AR and sales updates reach the credit check? Can clearing or a reversal alter the result? Who authorizes an exception, and how can Finance reconstruct the decision?

Document the actual configured landscape, because product edition, integration architecture and policy determine the precise transactions and available functionality.
