Customer account clearing in SAP FI matches eligible debit and credit open items on a customer account when their amounts and other prerequisites agree. A clearing document records the match. A receipt posted on account does not necessarily clear the invoice it was intended to pay.
Why clearing matters
An invoice creates an open receivable. A bank receipt can arrive without a usable invoice reference. The account may then hold both the unpaid invoice and an unallocated payment; the net balance can look normal while collections continues chasing the invoice. Finance needs reliable document matching, not only an arithmetic zero.
Posting with clearing and account clearing
Posting with clearing posts a new incoming payment while clearing selected invoices in one step. Account clearing matches documents that were posted separately. Automatic clearing depends on configured criteria and zero balances, while exceptions may need controlled manual review.
Example: two invoices and one payment
Suppose one customer owes ₹90,000 on one invoice and ₹60,000 on another. The bank receipt is ₹1,50,000 and explicitly references both. The team can clear the matched documents if customer identity, company code, currency, references and permitted differences agree. An identical payment amount with a mismatched payer or unexplained deduction would call for review, not automatic clearing.
Controls for mismatches
Verify the account and original documents, check for duplicate receipts and credit memos, investigate differences, and review the resulting clearing entries. Short payment or residual items require an approved process. An incorrect clearing may need to be reset or reversed. SAP product edition, configuration and permissions determine the precise permitted steps.
