Direct answer

SAP Asset Accounting uses the FI company code as the legal accounting unit, assigns a chart of depreciation to make that company code ready for asset accounting, and uses depreciation areas to represent relevant valuation views. Asset classes organize individual asset master records; profit centers and cost centers can add management responsibility, but they do not replace company-code accounting.

Start with the financial reporting unit

A company code is an independent FI accounting unit with its own statutory accounting context. It can own assets at several plants and offices. A plant is a logistical location, not automatically a separate legal company code; moving a machine between plants does not necessarily transfer legal ownership.

For Asset Accounting, the company code must be assigned a chart of depreciation. That association determines which depreciation areas and valuation treatments are available to its fixed-asset records.

Asset accountants need the legal owner, valuation view and responsible cost center to agree.

The chart is not the same as the chart of accounts

The chart of accounts defines G/L accounts used in FI postings. The chart of depreciation organizes depreciation areas and the valuation perspectives those areas represent, such as book and additional reporting valuations where configured.

Depreciation areas may post to the general ledger or support other valuations according to the applicable SAP edition and configuration. Do not assume every area creates its own independent G/L posting.

Illustration: one manufacturer, two locations

Suppose a manufacturer operates a Pune factory and a Nagpur service centre under the same legal company. Its machinery and service equipment can belong to one FI company code even though their responsible cost centres differ. A separate subsidiary requiring its own statutory books may instead use another company code.

The asset accountant should check legal ownership, company code, useful life, depreciation area, asset class and account determination before recording a purchase or transfer.

What consultants should verify

Confirm that company code, assigned chart of depreciation, account determination, ledger requirements and asset classes form a coherent configuration. Examine whether depreciation runs and acquisition postings reconcile with the intended G/L accounts and reporting principles.

Beware of mixing profit-centre reporting, organizational ownership and physical location. They answer different questions, and confusing them can misstate fixed-asset balances.
