Corrective maintenance is repair work performed after an equipment problem is known, but it does not necessarily mean an uncontrolled emergency. In SAP EAM / PM, a planner can create or process maintenance work for a requested repair, plan the required activities and resources, release the order, record execution, technically complete the work, and close it when the business follow-up is finished.
Corrective does not always mean breakdown
A defect can be found before an asset completely fails. A pump may still run but show leakage or abnormal vibration; the business may decide to repair it during the next suitable maintenance window. That is corrective because the work responds to a known condition. Breakdown work is driven by loss of required function, while emergency work is driven by urgency. Keeping those distinctions clear helps prioritization and reporting.
The maintenance order provides execution control
SAP documentation for corrective maintenance describes planning repair tasks and resources, releasing the maintenance order, executing the work, recording progress, technically completing the order, and later completing it for business purposes when no further costs are expected. The order therefore connects the technical problem with labor, materials, external services, timing and completion evidence.
Corrective, emergency and preventive work answer different questions
Corrective maintenance asks how to repair a known problem. Emergency maintenance asks how to restore or protect operations when intervention cannot reasonably wait. Preventive maintenance asks what recurring work should be triggered before failure, often through maintenance plans or cycles. The labels describe intent; the exact order types and process variants should follow the organization’s approved SAP design.
Consultant checks
Confirm the technical object, problem description, priority, process or order type, operations, work center, materials or services, planned timing, confirmations and completion rules. Also establish whether the organization uses a phase-based or non-phase-based maintenance process, because the statuses and user flow can differ even when the business objective is the same.
