A practical example

Suppose a manufacturer receives a machined component. The inspection plan might contain an operation for dimensional inspection and characteristics for diameter, surface finish and visual damage. A quantitative characteristic could define a target and tolerance; another characteristic might use a qualitative code set. Sampling can determine how many pieces are checked.

When an inspection lot is created for an applicable process, SAP can use relevant inspection specifications to support results recording and the later quality decision. The exact determination depends on process and configuration, which is why consultants should separate the concepts of inspection type, inspection lot and inspection plan rather than treating them as interchangeable.
