Direct answer

A sales billing document states who is invoiced, for which items, how much and under which terms. Financial Accounting records the resulting customer claim and the relevant revenue, tax or deduction lines. In a typical invoice, receivables are debited and revenue is credited, with further lines according to configuration. SAP Learning notes that billing can create related financial documents, but successful posting and status still need to be checked.

The two records have different purposes

Sales users examine sales orders, deliveries, billing types, quantities and pricing conditions. Finance examines reconciliation accounts, G/L assignment, posting periods and accounting-document references. A shipped order is not automatically a posted invoice, and a saved billing document should not be treated as a clean FI posting until the accounting status and journal are confirmed. Credit memos, cancellations and special billing types need their own correctly mapped treatment.

Account determination and a practical example

The customer business partner and reconciliation account shape the receivables side. Pricing and account determination help assign revenue and other postings, while company code, tax setup and document details affect the result. Consider an illustrative invoice of ₹100,000 plus ₹10,000 tax: the journal could debit customer receivables ₹110,000 and credit revenue ₹100,000 plus tax liability ₹10,000. These are deliberately hypothetical amounts, not a prescribed tax rate or universal revenue-recognition pattern.

Three evidence checks before closure

First confirm commercial correctness: product, quantity, price and relevant references. Second inspect financial correctness: account assignment, amount, tax, currency and posting date. Third trace the billing document to its accounting document and later correction or clearing activity. A missing account determination, closed posting period or integration error should be diagnosed through its actual status, not concealed by an unreferenced manual journal.

Roles and consultant thinking

Billing owns the commercial invoice and exception triage. FI owns ledger correctness and reconciliations. Integration consultants connect the test cases and identify where failures originate. Test normal billing, discounts, credit memo, cancellation, posting period closure and incorrect account assignment. For every test, compare sales status, FI posting, customer open item and end-to-end reference evidence.
