A depreciation key tells SAP Asset Accounting how to calculate depreciation for a particular asset valuation area. It draws on configured calculation methods, such as base and period-control methods, alongside the asset's useful life, value basis and other terms. The resulting amount is determined by the complete settings, not the key label alone.
What a depreciation key actually controls
A key connects calculation logic with the asset's depreciation terms. Depending on configuration, that logic can use ordinary depreciation methods, multilevel methods, declining-balance behavior, changeovers or period controls. The key is selected within the valuation context of a depreciation area. Two areas for the same asset may legitimately use different terms when policy and configuration allow.
Method and timing are different questions
Method answers how the depreciable value is spread over time. Period control helps determine the starting and ending periods for depreciation following events such as acquisition or retirement. A start date or asset-value date can therefore change the first-year charge even if useful life and method are unchanged. A method described as straight-line does not guarantee a full annual charge in the acquisition year.
Worked example: a machine and its useful life
For a purely illustrative machine costing ₹6,00,000, a zero-residual straight-line model over six full years yields ₹1,00,000 per full year before any partial-year treatment or adjustments. Actual SAP amounts may differ because of the valuation area, period-control rule, capitalization date, currency, rounding or subsequent transactions. The example explains business arithmetic rather than prescribing any key code or local tax treatment.
The control problem behind key changes
Changing a key or its configuration may not automatically correct past calculations. SAP documents recalculation needs and the effect of time-dependent terms. Before modifying a live depreciation rule, finance and configuration owners must assess affected assets, closed periods, ledger postings and approval evidence. Test one representative acquisition, one mid-year transfer and one retirement before accepting a changed method.
How consultants investigate unexpected depreciation
Begin with the asset and depreciation area, not a guessed transaction code. Review capitalization values, useful life, depreciation start, assigned key, calculation detail and posting run. Reconcile the Asset Explorer or equivalent supported view with general-ledger postings. Separate a calculation discrepancy from a posting-timing issue: a correct planned amount can still be awaiting periodic posting.
Common confusion
A depreciation key is neither a chart of depreciation nor a depreciation area. The chart groups valuation areas; each area represents a purpose; the key and relevant terms determine calculation behavior in that area. Keep those layers separate when documenting a defect or explaining an asset to an auditor.
