Direct answer

In SAP EAM / PM, a work center is a resource master used on maintenance orders and task-list operations. It can represent a craft group, crew, person, machine group or another execution resource. The main work center can show overall responsibility, while operation work centers identify who performs individual work steps.

Why work centers matter

Technical objects tell planners what must be maintained; work centers tell them who or what will do the work. SAP documentation describes work centers as the place where scheduling, capacity and costing data is maintained.

Main and performing work centers

The header main work center commonly represents the group responsible for the order. Individual operations can use the same or different work centers, allowing a job owned by one team to include specialist work by another.

Capacity, scheduling and cost

Work-center master data can hold capacity and operating-time information used to calculate resource load. It can also connect to cost centers and activity types so planned internal work can be valued.

One work-center master can support responsibility, capacity, scheduling and internal cost planning.

Consultant checks

Choose work-center granularity to match how the business dispatches work. Too many work centers create maintenance overhead; too few can hide meaningful differences in skills, capacity or cost.
