Direct answer

In SAP EAM / PM, a maintenance strategy defines the rules for a sequence of planned maintenance work. It contains maintenance packages with cycles and scheduling information, and can be assigned to maintenance task lists and strategy-based maintenance plans.

When a strategy is useful

A simple single-cycle plan can cover one recurring interval. A strategy plan is useful when maintenance has layered intervals, such as inspection every month, a larger service every quarter and a major overhaul annually or after defined performance thresholds.

What the strategy contains

SAP documents the strategy as a reusable structure with a strategy header, scheduling parameters, scheduling indicators and maintenance packages. Packages define the individual cycle at which work should occur and may be time- or performance-based.

A good strategy turns several maintenance obligations into a coherent recurring sequence.

Strategy versus plan

The strategy defines reusable cycle logic; the maintenance plan applies scheduling to actual maintenance items. SAP notes that strategy plans require a maintenance strategy, while simple single-cycle and multiple-counter plans do not.

Consultant checks

Confirm the package cycles, scheduling indicator, call horizon, shift factors and the business meaning of each interval. Align packages with task-list work so that the right scope is due at each maintenance package.
