An enhancement request describes a desired capability or improvement, not necessarily a defect or urgent incident. Support and product owners prioritize it by clarified business outcome, affected users, regulatory or operational deadlines, expected value, implementation effort, dependencies, testing risk and available release capacity. Governance assigns who can approve trade-offs and when a request moves from backlog to delivery. SAP Cloud ALM can help document and plan requirements, but the actual scoring policy is organization-specific.
Separate enhancement from urgent service restoration
An incident calls for restoring an existing service; a problem investigation looks for root causes. An enhancement changes or extends expected behavior. Severity labels for incidents should not simply be copied into the enhancement backlog. A request may matter commercially yet still require design, impact assessment, testing and a planned release.
Turn vague wishes into a business outcome
Replace a request such as 'add a button' with an explanation of which activity is slow, who is affected, how often it occurs and what success would look like. Ask whether an existing standard workflow already solves the problem. Capture evidence and constraints before asking engineers to estimate the work.
How prioritization discussions actually work
A governance meeting can compare value, urgency, risk, effort and dependencies without pretending that one numerical formula fits every company. A compliance deadline may outweigh a convenience improvement; a seemingly simple enhancement may depend on a major integration change. Protect capacity for incident handling and maintenance as well as planned improvements.
An illustrative decision
A reporting filter requested by 200 users could have broad value and modest effort. A custom invoice approval route may affect fewer users but carry audit exposure and testing complexity. The product owner should explain the trade-off, confirm required controls and schedule feasible work. Rankings must change when evidence, regulatory deadlines or technical dependencies change.
From accepted request to release
Once a request is approved, give it a clear owner, acceptance criteria, solution approach, test scenarios, deployment window, rollback consideration and post-release measurement. SAP Cloud ALM requirements can maintain planning attributes such as priority, responsible team, effort and release. These fields support governance; they do not substitute for a business decision.
Consultant questions that improve the backlog
Who benefits and how will value be measured? Is this a gap in configuration, data quality, authorization or user understanding? What touches finance, security or an external interface? Could the request conflict with a planned upgrade? Who approves a change in priority, and how are rejected or deferred decisions explained to requesters?
