Direct answer

Emergency fixes are expedited production changes made when critical business functionality cannot wait for the normal release calendar. Good governance shortens the approval route without dropping essential impact assessment, authorization, controlled testing, rollback or proof of business recovery.

Deciding whether the change is urgent

Assess business disruption, deadline, availability of a safe workaround, compliance exposure and potential data harm. Organizations set their own emergency criteria and approval roles. SAP Solution Manager documents emergency-change processing for supported landscapes; other tools may implement governance differently.

Approval before changing production

Link the fix to a specific incident, define the smallest change, identify an accountable approver and record who implements, tests and observes it. Keep the rollback conditions and communication contacts ready. A technical green light alone is not business authorization.

Example: bank interface failure

Before the finance cutoff, an incoming bank interface stops processing. Staff check which records are affected and whether safe manual continuity is possible. A mapping defect is isolated, tested against valid and rejected messages and reviewed for duplicate-processing risks before any authorized deployment.

Validate and reconstruct the event

After deployment, verify the business workflow, monitor connected interfaces, confirm that failed items have appropriate treatment and document actual outcomes. Preserve the change record, transport or deployment evidence, approval and timestamps.

Improve controls after recovery

Use a retrospective to identify missing tests, repeated defects or problematic dependencies. Determine whether a permanent correction should enter the planned support release. Ask who may invoke an emergency route, which controls cannot be bypassed and who will verify recovery.
