Direct answer

Explain a career change by connecting real sourcing decisions to the business processes supported by SAP, while identifying what you still need to learn. Experience running an RFx or negotiating a contract is valuable; it is not evidence that you configured SAP Ariba or implemented SAP S/4HANA.

Start with verifiable sourcing experience

Choose a tender, supplier comparison, category strategy or contract renewal that you actually helped deliver. Describe the business problem, decision criteria, stakeholders, approvals and your precise responsibility. Explain commercial and risk trade-offs without inventing savings or outcomes.

Translate commercial work into SAP process thinking

Map the example to sourcing events, supplier records, contracts and procurement handoffs. SAP Ariba Sourcing supports sourcing-event processes, while SAP S/4HANA covers operational procurement and related documents. Keep product knowledge and actual project delivery separate; an interviewer may reasonably ask you to explain where information and approvals must flow.

An example answer

“In strategic sourcing, I have compared suppliers using commercial terms, service risks and approval controls. I want to work closer to the enterprise processes behind those decisions. I have studied the sourcing lifecycle, supplier information and purchasing handoffs in SAP learning materials. I have not yet delivered a SAP implementation, but I can contribute practical sourcing judgment and build configuration and testing skills with experienced colleagues.” Personalize the statement only where your own record supports it.

Distinguish strengths from gaps

Your strengths might include negotiation, governance, RFx analysis and stakeholder management. SAP-specific gaps may include master data, access concepts, system document flow, configuration, integrations and test evidence. Acknowledge these openly and describe realistic practice rather than claiming a production project you did not run.

Prepare for the follow-up questions

What supplier data must remain accurate? Who approves exceptions? How do sourcing awards become purchase commitments? What would you test if a purchasing organization changes? Bring one anonymized example, a simple process map and an honest learning plan. Do not promise a certification or job outcome.
