Direct answer

Results analysis in SAP Project System supports the period-end valuation of project work, such as work in process, reserves and revenue or cost-related values under a configured results-analysis method. It uses project data and valuation rules to calculate accounting-relevant results for eligible objects, typically billing-relevant WBS elements. Results analysis is not itself a customer invoice or a bank receipt. The values and subsequent financial postings depend on the project's controlling design, results-analysis key, accounting principles and SAP edition.

Why projects need period-end valuation

A project may incur engineering and material costs long before customer billing is due. At month-end, the posted costs, progress, contractual billing and accounting view can point to different amounts. Results analysis helps Finance apply a consistent valuation approach to eligible work. The underlying business question is how much activity remains in process, how much can be represented as a recognized result and whether a reserve is required. These are governed by approved accounting policy, not by how attractive the project dashboard looks.

What information feeds results analysis?

The relevant WBS structure, actual cost and revenue postings, billing status, planned values, period, object status and method-dependent parameters can influence the calculation. In classic SAP PS scenarios the results-analysis key identifies the valuation approach and controls which processing applies to an object. The exact eligible WBS objects and settings should be confirmed in the live system. In SAP S/4HANA, alternative revenue-recognition mechanisms may apply to some project scenarios, so a consultant must establish the edition and accounting solution before proposing a design.

Project controller and Finance lead assess WBS actual costs, project progress and billing before a period-end valuation.
Project Controls and Finance reconcile operational progress with accounting evidence.

Worked example: costs before a billing milestone

Assume an engineering project has incurred ₹8 lakh of eligible costs by month-end, while contractual billing will occur only after a later acceptance milestone. A project dashboard reports work performed, but customer billing remains zero. The finance team cannot simply treat ₹8 lakh as revenue or expense in a preferred way. It must apply the configured valuation method and accounting policy to determine any work-in-process or other relevant results-analysis values, then review the recognized balances in financial reporting.

A different contract using resource-related billing or a completion-based accounting approach can lead to different results. The numerical outcome cannot be inferred from costs alone; the appropriate calculation requires method-specific data and configuration.

Results-analysis key, method and period

In classic SAP PS, the results-analysis key on relevant project objects works with controlling settings to identify the valuation approach. Processing is period-specific and relies on available actual and planned information as required by the chosen method. A calculated value may change if costs are corrected, project progress is updated, revenue is billed or the method's inputs are revised. Changing configuration to force a target margin is not a legitimate period-end control.

Layered results-analysis model: WBS project data, valuation rule, calculated balance and Finance review.
Results analysis connects project evidence to method-specific valuation and financial review.

How results analysis relates to settlement

Calculating a period-end value and transferring its accounting effect are different stages. Depending on the configured SAP PS process, settlement and other period-end activities can carry relevant calculated values into Financial Accounting or controlling receivers. A successful calculation without the expected downstream postings is not the same as a completed close. Verify the order of period-end steps, any reversals, receiver rules and reconciliation to the general ledger.

Controls and consultant questions

Which WBS elements require results analysis? What valuation method is justified by the contract and accounting policy? Are period, actual costs, planned data and progress reliable? Who reviews exceptions and reserves? Are project status changes approved? Can Finance reconcile calculated values, settlement documents and balance-sheet accounts? The business outcome is reproducible period-end valuation, not simply a completed SAP job.
