Direct answer

In SAP Extended Warehouse Management, the outbound delivery order is the execution context for shipping goods. It helps plan and monitor picking, packing, staging, loading and the goods-issue process. The requirement may originate in an integrated ERP delivery or another supported scenario. Document creation by itself does not prove any package has physically moved.

Pick, pack, stage and load have separate meanings

A warehouse task directs stock from an identified location; its confirmation records execution. Packing organizes the goods into handling units for verification and transport. Staging positions the confirmed packages near the right door, and loading records their transfer to the vehicle when that is part of the design. Configuration can vary, but the business must always distinguish expected from completed work.

What happens when the physical count is short?

Suppose the outbound order requests 120 pieces but the picker finds 118. Staff should record the discrepancy, check alternate stock or replenishment, and follow the approved quantity-adjustment or exception route. Marking 120 as picked simply to close a task would create inaccurate stock and delivery evidence. Packaging identification and shipment labeling also need to match the actual goods.

Goods issue is the decisive posting step

The goods-issue milestone connects warehouse execution with inventory or enterprise-system postings. It is not synonymous with a pallet being physically on the dock. SAP Help describes distinct activity statuses for picking and loading, and an outbound delivery order supports posting and reversal actions. An outbound order with confirmed tasks may still require a goods-issue posting, or the posting may fail and need resolution.

Controls for implementation and testing

Ask who can release a picking wave, adjust a short pick, change a HU, confirm loading, post goods issue and reverse a wrong posting. Test normal pick, partial pick, wrong product, damaged package, mismatched door, blocked posting and reversal. Verify the order, task confirmations, handling units, stock balances and posted status tell a consistent story.
