Direct answer

A project transitions into steady-state support when the implementation team transfers agreed operational responsibilities to a business and technology support organization. This requires named owners, accessible runbooks, trained service teams, incident and change processes, monitoring, unresolved-issue disposition and a documented acceptance decision. Hypercare bridges initial production stabilization and business-as-usual operations; it is not itself a permanent support model.

Begin handover planning before production cutover

Support staff should not first discover the implemented landscape on the day the project team leaves. During delivery, define who will own applications, integrations, jobs, business processes and technical escalation. Identify the contact route for users, critical operating windows and the knowledge needed to troubleshoot the highest-risk scenarios.

Distinguish hypercare from steady-state operations

Hypercare is the intensified early-production support period when issues are triaged rapidly and project specialists may remain readily available. Steady-state support has repeatable intake, severity classification, service ownership, escalation, release discipline and service performance review. The transition point is determined by agreed readiness criteria, not just a calendar date.

A concrete manufacturing example

After an SAP rollout, a factory may still encounter intermittent goods receipt failures at shift change. Before the project team exits, support needs a known-issue record, steps to identify affected postings, operational workaround when permitted, impact assessment, owner for root-cause correction and escalation to the relevant technical or functional team. The shift supervisor also needs to know how to open and follow a ticket.

Operational documentation has to be usable

A file repository alone is not a handover. Support engineers must be able to find process maps, interface ownership, job schedules, alert thresholds, approved workarounds, configuration decisions, dependency maps, access procedures and current contact lists. Material should be version-controlled and maintained by named owners. Sensitive access details must be protected rather than copied into open runbooks.

Transfer the open backlog honestly

Classify outstanding production defects, design requests, training questions and improvements into the appropriate future ownership. Each item needs business impact, priority, status, target response, dependencies and a named owner. Do not relabel unresolved critical problems as enhancements simply to declare the project closed. Decide how inherited defects count against agreed service measures.

Make support readiness observable

The service desk should show that it can route a test issue to the correct functional resolver, the operations team can detect a failed integration or job, and business owners know their approval responsibilities. Test a normal user request, a material production incident and a controlled change scenario. Validate monitoring, roles, emergency contacts and recovery dependencies.

Governance and formal acceptance

The project manager coordinates the transfer package; process owners validate operational procedures; application support accepts service responsibility; security verifies appropriate access; and the sponsor or designated authority approves closure against defined criteria. A handover meeting without action owners and acceptance evidence does not make the service ready.

Measure after the transition

Useful measures include the age and recurrence of incidents, overdue critical issues, fulfillment of agreed service targets, automation of routine checks and successful resolution without repeatedly recalling project specialists. Continue monitoring adoption and process performance. SAP Activate's Run phase emphasizes effective operations and continuous improvement, so the handover should create a sustainable feedback loop.
