Vendor managers often understand supplier onboarding, document validity, compliance checks, segmentation, contract obligations, service performance and escalations. These are relevant to enterprise process design because they describe what an organization needs a supplier record and workflow to accomplish.
Which existing skills matter?
The transferable capability is not knowing individual vendors. It is knowing who approves them, which evidence matters, when they are eligible to transact and what happens if information is inaccurate.
Connect those skills to SAP
Onboarding experience can inform learning about business-partner and supplier master data, approval workflows and qualifications. Performance reviews connect to supplier evaluation and scorecards. Contract and service exceptions connect to purchasing processes and downstream financial controls.
SAP Ariba Supplier Lifecycle and Performance and SAP S/4HANA sourcing and procurement address different but related process families. Choose which to study based on actual responsibilities, not solely on the word vendor in a job title.
Example: a supplier certificate expires
A key supplier's required certificate expires before a large purchase order. A vendor manager knows how to verify the evidence, consult policy, request remediation, document a decision and escalate an exception. These skills translate well into process ownership and controls.
An SAP consultant must also understand where eligibility data lives, which configured status and workflow apply, how an order is affected and how to test the approval path. Do not claim to have configured these steps unless you actually have.
What does not transfer automatically?
Business experience does not itself prove SAP configuration, authorization design, integration mapping, migration or testing ability. Start by tracing a supplier through purchasing document flow and learning which system maintains authoritative data.
In a résumé or interview distinguish 'I managed supplier compliance' from 'I configured SAP supplier qualification'. Both experiences can be useful, but they mean different things.
Make your experience demonstrable
Prepare an anonymized supplier case with the original problem, evidence, responsible roles, approval rules, downstream effect and result. Explain how it could be modeled in a suitable SAP process, and separate your actual work from research or simulation.
Ask: who owns supplier data, who can change status, what blocks an ineligible supplier, and which purchasing or invoicing outcomes rely on correct records?
